Re: 19 or 21 p prop,

my choice is a 17 or 21 inch pitch, see iboats prop finder to be precise. I think its thru the prop exchast.

Re: 19 or 21 p prop,

I would go with the 17 just watch your rps's.
many boats of that size run 17's with no prob.
It should give you a great hole shot with little loss in speed + will help when you have the boat loaded up with weight! The 21 could turn it into a slug. What Rpm are you turning now at WOT?

Re: 19 or 21 p prop,

hi Dave and bg, it has a 19p aluminum and i broke a tip off,it needed redoing anyway, as it was bent a little, I don't have a tach, I'm a newbie, the repair shop ,(just did a impeller, and thermostat replacement) suggested bringing in the prop at the end of the season for a redo, but cruising iboats i can get a 17 or 21 for 62 or 128 in stainless. the redo would be 90, so got my fancy going.

Re: 19 or 21 p prop,

wajaja,
I am running a 19.5 Bayliner bowrider with a
115 Yamaha and am going to go to a 17" pitch prop.
I had a 19p and could only get 5000-5200 rpm.
I am told I should be 5500-5600 rpm.

Re: 19 or 21 p prop,

Check the antiventilation plate position in relation to the bottom of the boat. Flush up to an inch or two above the bottom is prefered so experiment with the X-dimension so see if you pick up some RPM. Just don't go so high you lose water pressure or have blow out in turns. Then choose a prop to do the final setup.

You really need a tach to figure out what prop to use.

Re: 19 or 21 p prop,

Thanks,

I have another question. Is the opt RPM posted anywhere on the engine or just in the Engine Manual? I need to go out and get the specs this weekend on the engine to order a manual but they cost like 100 bucks from Mercury. The prop on the boat right now is pretty crusty so I don't know if I will be able to get any info off of it.

I checked the Prop finder section and it lists Mercury RPM's from 4400 all the way to 5000. My engine right now only hits about 3900 rpm. I have a MerCrusier 898 but I don't know the horsepower. So I am pretty sure I need a new prop. Not only for performance but also for safety. The one on there is pretty old.

Also the outdrive? does not go up and down. I'm pretty sure it's locked in the down position, which is fine because it's in a slip and I don't plan on taking it out any time soon. But is there anyway to check? The bow comes out of the water fairly high at full speed, but not so high that it causes problems.

At WOT, at 3900 rpm the boat speed is 31 to 32 mph. As clocked by GPS. Any Idea how much more speed I will get if I get the RPMs up to 4400?

Thanks

T

Re: 19 or 21 p prop,

That would depend on whether it take a prop or tune-up(or both) to get to 4400RPM.
If the engine is good and healthy, 2 inches less pitch with the same type/design prop will put you in the 4400 range.

Re: 19 or 21 p prop,

OK I checked the engine this week-end. Listed on the Valve cover it said that its a Mercursier 898 and I forgot to write it down but I think the HP was 190 or 198. It listed the WOT rpm as 3800 to 4200, which is lower than the website says but I have ordered a manual and hope that will clear up the issue. It runs strong, but I don't have any Maintenance records and I am getting the firm opinion that the previous owner only did what he had to to keep it running. I fully intend to have the Fluids changed and engine tuned up as soon as I can get on the mechanics calendar. They never seem to have time to do any extra work although I see them sitting on the dock quite a bit smoking cigarettes. Where on the prop does it say what kind it is. I took some goggles and got in the water to try and figure it out but it's so crusty I could not read anything.

Thanks

T
