Re: 1923 Johnson 2hp boat motor~!
Hi Gards3,
The Johnson Model A was the first basic design from Johnson outboards (begun in 1923) and it sold quite well. That said, they're not rare and more than a few have survived the years. Value is whatever someone may pay for it. There is no set value for old outboards as there are simply too many factors in play. One week you'll see a garden variety motor go unsold at a swap meet for $20.00 and the next you'll see a similar motor go on eBay for $800.00. And following that you'll find some guy listing another similar motor thinking he'll cash in and it gets no bids at all. Depends on who wants it and how badly. Bottom line, don't plan your retirement around selling the motor...
The Johnson A's are very pretty motors when all buffed up and a fresh decal adorning the tank. They run quite well, too. Kinda like a Model T Ford - it's hard to kill them! If that's the route you want to take, check out the Antique Outboard Motor Club at www.aomci.org'. Their links page has info on sources for parts, decals, etc.
