I have an 8.1 hp Johnson Sea Horse which according to the serial number is a 1928 model; I have tried to get a shop manual for this engine to no avail by checking the vintage outboard web sites. I have had it running but would like to ensure that it is restored to like new condition. This motor belonged to my best friend who passed away two years ago from prostate cancer so I have a special attachment to it. If anyone has info on this engine I would appreciate it if you can share it with me. Thanks in advance........Don

We need your model number to confirm what you have as they didn't make an 8.1 hp in 1928. The only Johnson listed as an 8.1 hp is the 1935 model OK-75. Model number would be stamped on the serial plate on top of the flywheel.

Stamped on the flywheel is "JOHNSON MOTORS PETERBORO CANADA OKL75 80276". When I used that serial number on a Johnson vintage motors web site, a 1928 model year was indicated. Could the confusion here be due to a Canadian and not a US manufacture location? All the best......................Don

This can be of help

Early Johnson Service Manual

This may also help too.

manuals

Forgive me for not expressing appreciation for these pages up to now. I will use it as a reference but it seems that mine is older, being a non recoil start and also having cooling lines running outside from the foot to the engine. Thanks again......Don

Not sure what site you're viewing but it is incorrect. The OK75 (or long shaft OKL75 in your case) is indeed a 1935 model.

Hey Don. What you might do, is go to the AOMCI website and post a picture and model number of your motor on the "Ask A Member" forum and you'll find a lot of folks there willing to help out. Some may even have a restored version of yours. ;)

You are using a Canadian serial number on a US serial number list. If it were serial number 80276 on a US made Johnson motor you would be correct in it being a '28, but as Scott stated, yours is very much a 1935.

I thought I had an OK 75 in the basement, but only have an OK15 and OK60, the 75 must be up north.

I think you have hit the nail on the head so to speak; thank you to all who have responded.
