Greetings... I just became the excited owner of a 1946 1J Champion that is in super condition... no dents... bought it from a kid who took a small motor class and the instructor had this in his shed and said if he could get it running he could have it... So my "assumption" was that it was thoroughly gone through and 100% functional... didn't get to water test it before I bought it... fueled it up, put it in a barrel and she started on the second rope pull... ran kind of OK, wavered a bit, backfired and died... Since there isn't much on actually manipulating the fuel mixtures for idle and fast speed I figured it may have been something I did... cranked it back up on the 4th pull, ran decent, sounded nice, bogged down a little, backfired and stopped... then I notice the carburetor was leaking like a sieve... maybe I opened something up too much? maybe the gaskets are dried out?... can you even get a carb kit for this or do you have to make your own gaskets like in the "good ol' days"? and lastly, can anyone explain the proper way to adjust the fuel mixtures for idle and fast? Is there a manual somewhere? I've done small motor repairs before so am fairly mechanical, but that was 40-50 years ago... thank you...
