1946 Scott Atwater, Water Pump Removal/Inspection Question

Hi,

I just picked up a 1946 Scott Atwater outboard that runs, but I am unsure of the water pump's condition. I tried to remove the lower end last night to have a look, but I can't get it off. There only appears to be one bolt holding on the lower unit. I suspect there is an alignment dowel on the front portion that may be hung up with corrosion. I tried beating on it, gently, and it still didn't move. I have it soaking in PB Blaster right now and will take another crack at it tonight after work.

So the questions, is it just the one nut/bolt that secures this lower end? Does anyone have a parts diagram for this model 461?

I'm trying to picture it as I've worked on a few but I'm sure there's another bolt. You have to remove the back cover of the lower unit; where the gears and oil are and there's another one there. It's easy but a pain since you'll probably have to make a replacement gasket and the gear grease will be all over. Since you didn't mention the horsepower I'm only familiar with the 3.6, 5.0 and 7.5 versions of Scott / Firestone.

Twocyclemania,

Thanks for the reply. It is a 3.6hp. It makes sense that there is another bolt behind the cover plate. I figured I was going to open up the case and have a look at the gears eventually, so this will just move that operation and gasket making to happening a little sooner. I guess I will stop banging on the lower unit will a hammer now...

OK, so I removed the two screws on the back cover and was greeted with several ounces of water and very old gear lube. Surprisingly the gears were fine with no rust, very surprising. There, also to greet me, was the second nut that held on the lower end. The lower unit came off without too much complaining.

So, the water pump impeller, or rotor as I believe it is termed, was in one piece. I is nearly hard as a rock, I think this is supposed to be pliable rubber, correct? I did some looking and I have not found a replacement yet. I believe the Scott Atwater part number is 463-5100. Does anyone know where I can source this rotor? I am also looking for the prop shaft seal p/n 462-3109, again does anyone know who might have this?

P.S. We got our first snow of the season last night, about 1.5 inches. Summer is officially over...

Yes, the rubber should be pliable though I've given some leeway with impellers that were not quite as pliable as I would like. This applies only to the circular type with the appendage which is probably what you have. There is one for sale for about $20 on ebay. You'll have to search for it as if I remember correctly it was listed under some oddball outboard brand. If I can find it I'll let you know though it may not be the one you need. Good luck on the prop seal. Just finding some water (as I do in most of my outboards) doesn't necessarily mean you have to replace the seal. Some silicone grease may help unless the rubber is really beat. Some water in the lower unit is not the end of the world and sometimes it's just easier (for those of us that are lazy or use the motors only on occasion) to periodically change the grease/oil.

Checked ebay: There's one listed for about $25 and you can find it under Hiawatha, Brooklure and another listed as for a Johnson (pricey at $35). If they look like the one you have make sure you ask for the dimensions.

Where is the pee hole on a 56 7.5 Scott Atwater?
