I'll leave it to the discretion of the mods as to whether this thread needs to be moved, but I'm posting it here in order to reach the Jonnyrude crowd, who would have the most interest.

The following is a CL ad that I saw today, for a running HD25. The price seems good, although the motor would have to be repainted, if a full restoration is desired. Take a look.

Disclaimer: I am not involved in this sale in any way - its just an ad that I saw and I'm not personally interested in the motor.

Update: Looks like the same guy has a 1958 Clinton J8 for sale, as well.

Believe it or not, I seen one local to me, needing to be put back together for just 75 bucks. I was tempted, but I'm already in process of restoring a '41 HD-20.

There's not a whole lot of these little buggers left out there, compared to the TD models, unfortunately.

No HDs but plenty of TNS

Do you have a link?

If coaxed into running correctly, they are a thing of beauty! The coaxing part can be a biatch, IMHO...

I have a running hd25 that runs pretty good. There has been some discussion about modifying the carb to prevent rpm surging.

I heard that the crank journals will have a lot of bearing on how well they run too. If they are run too lean on the oil, that will affect how well they run after several years, because the journals get excessfully worn.

The issue I am referring to involves the rpms fluctuating. The solution suggests placing a pin inside a clean out plug in the carb to prevent the fuel from vapor locking. I have yet to do this, however....I have other projects ahead of my HD.

I didn't put a link, because I wasn't sure if that was OK, but if you look in the CL/New Orleans/For Sale/Boats section, you'll find it. It was in yesterdays ads. You could also use the search function to find the ad.

This is true. On these 3 port rotary valve 2-strokes, if you have excessive crank journal clearance, pressure from the opposite cylinder can intrude into the cylinder and cause strange running characteristics. Testing compression with a compression gauge will not reveal excessively worn bearings, but excessively worn bearings will cause running issues and lowered compression. Since they are bronze bushed and don't use replaceable bearing inserts or needle bearings, a worn motor will need another block and crank. Unfortunately any replacement parts will likely be just as worn since the last of these motors were made in 1951. In theory one could get the crank hard chromed on the journals, then machined back down to proper tolerances, but it is not at all economically feasible.

Dad bought an HD brand new after coming home after WWII. He traded it a few years later for a TN-26 which he used until he wore it out. I now have that motor all restored with a donor block and all is good (except I still need the leather washers for the carb & plunger, wherever I can find those... )

You can find those at Sea-Way Marine. They have done really well supplying me with my needs for the restoration on my HD-20

You could also get them from a fellow AOMCI member.

Send $7.00 per set (cash only, no checks) and SASE (self addressed stamped envelope) to: Lloyd Lautner, 9289 North Long Lake Road, Traverse City, Michigan 49684

Yup...Lloyd is the man. I got a couple of sets from him too. He also sent a description of how to install.

That is exactly where buying from him helps, his guidance and instructions. Probably the most knowledgeable guy Ive ever talked to in regards to the H and T series of motors.

cool. I'll remember this for the rebuild I'll do on my own carb too.
