48 sea kings and many others up into the early 50's were direct drive, no neutral in other words. If the motor is running the prop turns, reverse by turning the motor 180 degrees. very simple, reliable technology...just make sure the boat is tethered or is pointed to open water when you start it up. enjoy your sea king...very reliable outboards.

1948 5Hp Sea King 74GG9012 = Gale 2W3 for what it's worth. I see way more Sea Kings than Gales for some reason. Your Sea King was made by Gale.

Once you learn how it behaves and if it is running tip top you may be able to start it at reduced throttle maybe even a slow troll. You could hold on to the dock with one hand or loop a rope around a cleat at that speed. Some of the 5s had a neutral clutch.I don't think yours does.If it does it is a little lever on the lower left near the tiller as you face the motor.
Had a friend with an old, late forties,50hp Evinrude big four on a race boat.
With the straight drive it would almost plane when he started it.That required serious preperation when starting.
