Haven't seen this boat in the flesh yet. Just some pics. Owner says it is a 1949 and says a transom plaque reads "combination rowboat and outboard motor boat." Says hull number on knee brace is B4947. Notice across the floor rather than bow to stern stringer style bracing. I thought cross wise bracing came much later. Notice also the transom is flat across the top with no splash tray. Owner says boat does not leak, but has two welds, where someone once put it on blocks and let it corrode through. The two welds--3" and 6" long--are below water line on the hull and were never ground down or done for aesthetics.

Questions:

Any one recognize what model of Alumie this one is? Was there a Model B?

Does 1949 seem a plausible year for this boat pictured? Does B4947 mean Model B 1949, hull # 47 that year?

Are these welds something that could be re-welded, or ground down to get a better appearance and slicker hull?

Anyone ridden in a late 1940s Alumacraft? Did they perform similarly with the models in the 1950s?

Yup, there was a Model B per the literature of the day. I will quote from the foldout brochure I have..."Primarily a rowboat, but designed to accomodate mtores up to 5.5 H.P OBC Certified. Semi-round bottom. Length: 14'; Width Amidships: 46"; Width Transom: 36"; Depth Amidships: 16"; Depth Transom: 16"; Weight: 112 lbs. At this time (likely pre-1949) they had the Model B, Lifetime Ducker, Model E, Model F and Model A. The B had a semi-round hull while the others had a round hull. Your photos indicate a fairly sharp transition from the side to the bottom of the boat....I was told the models were delineated as the letter and then the three digit number beginning with 100 or 101. 1949 boats I have seen follow this...yours seems to indicate a different approach. Looks all AlumaCraft to me. Enjoy your time capsule.

Re: 1949 Alumacraft ?

I just purchased a 1956 version of this boat this weekend and got back from the lake for it's maiden voyage. I had a blast! I originally got it for a 20hp Johnson I purchased, but it seems that motor is too much for this boat. It came with aluminum oars and a 18lbs thrust Minn kota, I was surprised how well the little electric trolling motor pushed it. To be honest I got little too excited and jumped the gun by purchasing this boat. I really need a boat to handle the 20hp Johnson. But I'm really glad I got this boat!

Thats a cool little boat. I recently snagged a 1948 "A" series which I like a lot.
