A good friend of mine just got a 1949 Sea King motor. When we try to run it, it will run for maybe 5-10 minutes at a time and then it sounds like it's bogging out and dies. While it is running sometimes with the throttle up, it will just cruise and then all of a sudden it will jump up to full speed and then bog out and die. What could the problem be and how do we fix it?
Thanks for your time!

Has he done anything to the motor yet, probably needs a new impeller and ignition.

Stop running it till it dies like that. It probably is overheating and if you continue to do it you will destroy it and won't have anything left.

If it really is a 1949, it probably is a Gale. They have a wobbler type pump with a "rotor" instead of the familiar impeller. The rotor swells up when grease gets on it, and most of those old ones leaked grease.

Lastly, clean the breaker points. Sounds like it is running on one cylinder till the other one kicks in--that is the surge of power.
