I have stripped down a 1950 5hp ELTO. When I removed the gearcase, which has been stored for years, I looked inside and saw what looked like rust. Do I took the gearcase apart, and, sure enough - there was a layer of rust on everything. I sprayed everything down with fogging oil, then took the prop gear out and used a wire wheel to clean it up. It came clean, but there is lots of pitting on the gear teeth.
Should I just chuck this, or could this be reused?
Second question - the pinion gear is still on the driveshaft - looks like there was something like a cotter pin used to hold it in place. What is the secret to taking the pinion gear off?
