1950 Brooklure gravity fuel system to a fuel pump

I?m looking at converting from a gravity fuel system to a fuel pump system. I was looking around and I saw something about installing a pulse fuel pump but that I would need to drill and tap the crank case for the pulse line on the pump. I was worried about a couple of this with this, one was that the pressure created by the pump might be too much and would flood the engine. I think I could control the pressure using a split in the line with one line returning to the gas tank and the other going to the carburetor. If I attached valves on those lines I could control the pressure of the gas entering the carburetor to a similar pressure as if it were gravity fed. The second problem I am having is where exactly I would tap the crank case. I was wondering if anyone has tried this or if it was even possible. If so where would be the best place to tap the crank case? I?m doing this because the motor I bought did not come with a gas tank or cover, but it runs fine. I attached a couple of pictures of the motor and carburetor. It?s a 1950 Brooklure.

I hate to tell you this, but the bottom feed carburetor won't work with a fuel pump. I've already tried it. The pressure holds the float pin closed. HOWEVER, you seem to have anticipated that, and have come up with an idea. Whether or not you scheme will work, I don't know. I'd say you are in unknown territory on this one. Let us know how it works out.

Thanks for the warning on it not working, but hopefully I have the pressure problem figured out. When you tried it did you use an electric fuel pump or the pulse type? If you used the pulse type where did you tap into the crank case? Whatever I do I just want to make sure I can undo it if it decides not to work.

It has been so many years ago that I don't remember all the details. But it was a pulse pump. Looking at a carburetor just now, it would appear that you could drill through it into the lower c/case chamber, maybe below the reed or there is a hollow under the reed that might work. You don't have to have room to tap threads, just drill a close-fitting hole for a piece of copper tubing, and Locktite the tube in. Use one of the red Locktites, and it won't come out.

I just want to be sure because I have never done anything like this before, and I don?t know that much about fuel pumps; does it not matter too much for the pulse pump where exactly I tap into the crankcase, for example could I drill into the side of the case if there?s an empty pocket?

Not there!
Unless I'm mistaken that's a channel where the lower rod end travels.

Thanks. I wasn’t talking about there specifically, just anywhere in general that would have a space open for me to tap. I am going to pull of the carburetor to check and make sure that I’d have space to drill it and that there were no moving parts for anything to run into. I just want to know if the fuel pump would work if I tapped into the side, bottom, top, back, or front of the crankcase; or is there a specific area I would have to tap into for the pump to work? I don’t want to just start drilling holes randomly in the crankshaft to find a spot that works.

Got it working. I was able to drill a tap into the bottom of the carburetor, there was only just enough room. It?s a crude setup right now, but I was able to get the motor to run well. I got a small reservoir that the fuel is pumped into before going to the carburetor. The overflow from the reservoir has a needle valve to better control the pressure of the fuel entering the carburetor. No problems with flooding or anything, now all I have left to do is try it out on the water.

Somehow, I knew you were going to pull it off and succeed. Congratulations.
