I just acquired what appears to be a 4.2hp hydro drive Champion motor with a two-bladed bronze prop, model #2LHD-2769. The only information I can find is that these motors were made from 1950-1952. 1950 was a single hydro drive; 1951 and 1952 were hydro drive super dlx. This motor also has an automatic recoil pull start. Does anybody know which model it is; how do I fill the gear case, and which oil should I use?

Thank you.

My book says it takes "Champion Lower Unit Oil". It doesn't explain what that is.

However, the 1953 Hydro-Drive says Champion Lower Unit Oil, --OR-- Extreme Pressure Outboard Gear Oil EP-90.

Sounds like they gave away their little secret, huh?
