I am working on this motor for a friend. The top cylinder has 65lbs compression and the bottom has 70lbs. It needs the carb rebuilt and the starter return spring. I have been unable to find any parts. I have only found 1954 and newer parts. Any ideas? Is this motor even worth it?

So a couple of questions...

1) When was the last time the motor was started? Do you know?

2) Do you know when the last maintenance was done on it?

3) Did it run well the last time it was started?

Evidently, Sierra doesn't make a carb kit for that. Check here:
vintageoutboard.com
tcoutboard.com
americanoutboard.com

I have no idea about the history of this motor. I am pretty sure that it ran well the last time that it was started. But I believe that it has been a few years.

This may help you quite a bit:
http://users2.ev1.net/~rainbowchaser/manuals/qd/qdr.html

A lot of very old engines are neglected by Sierra and to a degree BRP. But with the original part numbers in hand you can figure out the modern ones. Sites like ishopmarine.com will provide the latest part number for older ones.

Unfortunately, the rewind spring is listed under the old part number system, and I have no conversion table. But I'm pretty certain (I have a note that indicates) it's #395460 which sells both OEM and aftermarket for under $10.

I believe that a QD-10 is a 1949 model motor.

The carb system was an odd-ball, only used for a couple of years. I think it was in 1953 that they used the carb design that you can still by repair kits for from the factory. Not bad still getting parts for a 53 year old motor.
