I just picked up 2 1951 Majestic 4.2HP M2B outboards. One all apart in a box, the other 90percent. Together. The Problem: I can not get either of the two lower gear units apart. There is a Brass nut that the shaft runs through and that is screwed flush into the cast housing. It uses a spanning wrench. They won't budge and I must get them apart to reattach the gears inside. Help ?

EDIT: Model is M2M (I fat fingered it)

Closest book I have is 2MM. I'm wondering why you have to take it apart. Nevertheless, have you tried to see if it maybe is a left hand thread (like Mercurys were)? I'd hate to tell you how we got the Mercs apart after they were used in salt water.

If it is brass screwed into aluminum, heating it will be counterproductive because brass expands faster than aluminum, which will make it tighter. For that reason, try throwing it into the freezer overnite.

Somebody pulled the shaft out and the pinion gear fell in (on both). I thought about it being left hand thread but can't see the lead. Can you tell me more about the Mercs?

OK. There is no way I am going to get either of them apart. All I need to do is get the pinion gear back on the shaft. Someone said turn it upside down and jiggle the pinion back on the shaft. ???

That's what I suggest. Try various positions and let gravity do the work. You may get lucky.

You remove the old Merc covers by using a drill to destroy them, then replace. Not a good idea with your Champion.

EDIT: Does this look like your lower unit??

Yes!!!!!!!!!!! That is it. About an hour ago i figured being I had two I would get a little rough with one and figured out how to get the back piece off. You tap at the top of it and it rotates out of its dove tails and pops off. Pretty clever of them. Now I can get at the gears. Thanks for your help. I ordered an operators manual from ebay on the 2mb, mine says m2n which I think is a 1956 fishermans special.May have wasted 25.00.
It says "56m" before the serial number which I think means 1956.
