hello! i have identified this old motor as a 1951 5hp sea king by Wards. all the labels are worn off however, and i don't know squat about this motor. does it have reverse? what is the dial for? what is the knob under the dial with the long shaft for? what position does the sliding selector have to be in for starting? is this air cooled or does it have an impellar? i have done a good bit of searching but due to my limited understanding seem to be reading what i believe to be conflicting information. are the parts available online anywhere? looking for a carb/gasket kid, and impellar if applicable. thanks!

Whew, a bunch of questions. The motor was made by Gale for Wards.

I don't know if it has reverse because you haven't told us a model number. Does it spin all the way around? If it does, that is reverse.

The dial is the primer and high speed mixture adjustemnt.

The knob below is the fuel shut off valve from the tank

The sliding throttle control is left for slow/stop, and right for fast. Starting position is slightly to the right of center.

It is water cooled and does have an impeller. Which one depends on model number. Available from http://www.chrystine.com/impellers/order.html

There never was a carb kit. You have to order parts individually. Not all parts are available.

Before spending time, effort, and money, check the coils. They will be shot unless somebody has already replaced them. May be available here at iboats (model number??).

If you plan to keep that thing and work on it, do yourself a favor and get a parts book. Some parts are still available from Evinrude dealers, but they won't give you the time of day unless you have the part numbers. They don't have the book either.

sorry the model number is 15GG-9014 & the serial is 361125. thanks for the resource for impellers, thats very helpful made sure to bookmark that one. i'm thinking this may not be the best entry level antique outboard for a rookie to learn on? got it for free, so it doesn't owe me anything. looks like th only thing missing is the cowling, found that for 30 bucks on flea-bay. is anyone able to add a brief desciption of the process involved for replacing this impeller?

www.acmeoutboards.com has a manual/guide for your little Sea King. Those are good motors...simple, reliable and easy to maintain if you have some basic wrenching skills.

Your motor motor is a Gale model 5S10. A simple motor, and lots of them were made. Water pump is forward of the propeller. The impeller is properly called a "rotor". It should be a close fit on the eccentric in the center, and just touch the housing at some point on the outside. There should be a space where it is not touching. If you watch it closely while pulling the rope, you will see that space appear at the inlet side, and move around to the outlet side, where it disappears. That space is what takes a gulp of water from one side and moves it around to the other side, where it forces it up the water tube to the powerhead.
