hello
just picked up johnson 5 hp, 1952 i think, trying to replace impeller, took bottom unit off, see 4 screws, removed them, but what look like a shifter or such is preventing the shaft to come out? does it need to be disconnected before i can replace impeller?
thanks
Dan

If it really is a 1952 (model TN-xx), the neutral cable has to be disconnected, two screws in the clamp below the neutral lever on the tank. Also, to make it easier to reassemble, remove the clamp and curved pipe that the cable goes through. The cable will then come down with the pump and clutch assembly. Don't worry, it feeds back up through a tube.

If this doesn't apply, give us a model number.

ok, bottom off, but a small circular ring is preventing the impeller housing from coming off, therefore the impeller cant come off, is it stuck? , the impellers ive removed in the past go on from the top of shaft
any help would be appreciated

I'm thinking you are speaking of the seal retainer pressed onto the top end of the drive shaft? No problem, pull the shaft out of the clutch and bearing housing and access the pump parts from the bottom.

ok, after some persuasion, bottom came apart, but better to ask first, also, i see a rubber o ring and a metal flat washer came from top of shaft, i get the rubber as a power head gasket/seal , but the metal o ring gasket was all warped, any ideas?

Well, see there is a disadvantage here. Or several. I don't know what model you are working on. I don't know if it has the original seal or the modification kit that came out because the originals didn't work. And on top of all that, I'm trying to go on my memory of something 60 years ago.

Anyhoo, here is the original seal: http://s19.postimg.org/y7n06jn8z/TN_Seal_original.jpg

And the TN-27 kit: http://s19.postimg.org/yyfqcbpmb/TN27_lower_seal.jpg

And the TN-28 kit: http://s19.postimg.org/je8clsfhv/TN28_carbon_seal.jpg

So.....see anything that looks familiar?

I believe you have the "original seal" that I linked to, above. I do believe you have to pull the powerhead to make sure the rest of the stuff is still in there, and to replace these parts. FYI, from the top, the part numbers are 302348 plastic seal "retainer", 301967 O-ring, 302326 washer, and 302356 spring. You also will need two gaskets, 302355 and 004136. It appears that all are still available from Evinrude dealers except the 004136 gasket.

hello
thanks for input, i really have no plans to take powerhead off, this was a winter project, i will be buying igition and impeller, about 170 up in Canada, plus the other parts? it would be alot invested and still not sure it will run?
i looked up the shaft and do not see any springs, i will get a new flat and rubber washer, igntion, etc, and go from there
thanks
