How do I change the impeller on my old 1952 Johnson Seahorse 5 hp? The model is a TN28. I don't have a repair manual and can't seem find one on the web. To date, I've been able to get the lower unit off, but then, I'm stuck. I don't know how to get to the impeller section.

I have done that particular motor but those little kicker are pretty much the same. There of course be the shaft going down into the foot, follow it to where it meets the foot housing and there will be a cap that is bolted over the shaft. This is the water pump housing. They usually are bolted down with four screws, remove them. Next you will slide the cap up the shaft and off of the shaft. The water pump impellor will either be stuck in the cap or will come out of it, usually will stay in the cap. Just pull the impellor out and replace it with a new one and be sure and grease the tips of the impellor for lubrication. Repeat the steps backwards to replace the cap back onto the foot and tighten all screws snugg. Re-install the foot to the midsection and you are back in business. I know this seems lika alot but it is very easy.. Let us know if you need any more help.. :)

Bob,

Its a great little motor, a real classic. There are not a lot of parts to this motor once you get inside so it is easy to work on.

The lower unit is sort of shaped like a boot and there are 4 bolts on the bottom (just above the hole where you fill your gear oil). Take it apart there and then I recall there are 4 screws inside that will drop the impeller from the "boot" shaped housing. Don't lose the tiny pin that goes through the driveshaft and holds the impeller in place. Send an e-mail to ******************xx and I can send you a parts manual for this motor. Also be careful reassembling the bottom shaft, you may need to take the prop off, remove the lock ring and reassemble the bottom gears as you try to put the bottom unit back-on.

Good Luck!

GP

Thanks alanR1 and gprocks for your tips. I will give them a try and get back to you on how things work out.

As I recall though, once I got the 4 bolts off of the lower unit to remove it and to expose the interior bottom of the "boot", I wasn't able to get anthing else loose. It looked to me at that point like perhaps special tools might be needed to remove any more parts to get to the impeller. I'll give it another try.

Thanks again for your help.
BobK
