I have a 53 Sea King 35GG9014A that I would like to convert to a throttle cable control. I know it didn't come set up for this but has anyone done it? Thanks.

Are you thinking of something like a dead man's racing throttle, or just some kind of remote speed control? The concept is simple, but some inginuity will be needed in hooking it up. You would need to remove the throttle cam from the mag plate, then figure out a way to connect your cable to the carburetor's throttle valve. How will it turn out, you ask? I don't know. Never tried it on one of those. But the concept was used on a number of motors of the day.

Any type of speed control so I can hook up cable steering and control the speed from the middle of the boat. I thought the mag plate had to move to advance the timing along with the throttle?

You are correct about the mag plate. However some motors of the '50s era had a speed control where you left the mag plate at full advance and were able to close the carburetor separately. That would slow the motor down considerably, but it would run rough because the spark is still at full advance. Some examples are Johnson QD-10, Evinrude 14hp Fastwin, Martim 75 (7.5hp), some Eltos. This is also the way they did it on racing motors. Tons of Mercs fell into that category.

I know this isn't what you are looking for, but it's the only way to do it without considerable design re-engineering of the motor.

If it will help you any, a mag plate from a twist-grip control motor will fit, giving you a link to connect to. But you still will have to be mighty creative. If you do that, use the mounting rings also (without the friction wave washer)

You can see in the pic that you need to shorten the throw required to get to full throttle .looks like just uses an old fashioned choke cable may need a spring to
help return to idle.
If its not too crowded you could just make a tiller extension maybe extend the throttle lever a foot or so just lean closer to adjust speed.
You might just lean a little to steer might not need the tiller.
