Greenhorn here, I bought a 1954-55 12 HP Sea King GG 9016A off ebay for a 14' Alumacraft that I tried last season using a 1995 Mercury 25 HP, which was to heavy for it. In the ebay listing the owner said the MW Sea Kings were almost a copy of the Evinrude/Johnsons of that time. Also said he put a 15 HP carb from a Evinrude/Johnson which makes the engine a 15 HP because Gale put a dumb down carb in it to make it a 12 HP, so it wouldn't compete with the more expensive outboards. Anyone heard of that? Seems to run great. The owner put a video on ebay showing it running, I paid to much for it I guess, $250, but the owner did do a lot of work. What do you think? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FfWq5vRsms

Re: 1954-55 Sea King 12/15 HP question

The Sea King was built by the Gale Products Division of OMC, and yes it is related to the 15hp Evinrude. However, it is NOT a 15. It has a smaller bore size. It also has aluminum connecting rods, so don't cheat on the oil. They are good motors and a good value for the buck.

those are very good motors, but like Frank said the common myth that putting a bigger carb on them make more horsepower is just a myth.

That is based on the Gale 12D11 which uses a carb very similar to the 15 and possibly is the same carb. The plus is I'm betting it uses the same carb kit that also may cover many carbs..The 12D10 uses a different carb with only a high speed knob, and low speed knob. You turn the high speed to the choke position to choke. The 15 uses a different intake and powerhead.

Hi
Also a newbie. I notice that the 1951-53 12hp seakings 12d10 have the 19ci cylinder, wheras the 54/55 12d11 has the 17.99ci version.

Just a thought, but perhaps on the early versions they "dumbed-down" the power via a more restrictive carb (read-smaller jets), and whereas for the 54/55 (and later) they sleeved down the cylinder and used the same carb as the 15hp Johnson.

That might explain why some people claim to be able to get 15hp performance by changing carbs...but that would only work on the 19ci versions ie 51-53.
cheers

The early 12 and later 12 were totally different motors, with totally different carburetors. Now let's put this 9 year old thread back in the archives.
