I will try asking you guys again about a problem with my motor. Last time your help got my motor running. Thanks!

My problem is that the throttle gear on my 1954 7.5 H.P Evinrude will just at times spin and not turn the throttle. I took the rod and gear off but do not know what this is called, or how to get one. The gear is right where the tiller handle bends up. The other gear on the handle end looks fine but the gear towards the motor looks stripped. Anyone know this part name, number, where to get one? Thanks for any help again!

The part numbers are BRP 376416 and BRP 376415. However, the newer gear assemblys should work too and they are better and cheaper (BRP 377943 & 376689). The price of the gear assembly's new is around $100 total. I'd just find a used set. You can often find the entire tiller arm and steering bracket much cheaper than that. Any set from the 1950's up until the early 1980's (I believe) should work.

Place a free ad over at AOMCI.org and someone will set you up with a good set at a reasonable price.

You can probably make it work by going to Ace hardware and getting some nylon washers. Shim as necessary behind the gears to move them closer together. The problem was very common on the older stamped gears. Starting in 1956 they began using cast gears that were much better.
