Hi I am a new comer to this forum .. My question is what is the best way to go about getting this motor started. It is a Elgin Mod#571-58211 which has been sitting for about 15 years. I am sure I am going to have to take apart the carb, I am sure it is all gunked up. I have question like where do you start with the needle valve settings? etc. How would you suggest to clean the tank out? Where could I aquire a copy of the owners manual -- I do have the parts brake down manual

What ever help you and pass my way would be great
Thanks

Re: 1954 Elgin 2.0 hp

The info I have on this motor say the low speed needle should be open 1/2 turn and the high speed 3/4 turn for a cold start. After it warms up then start turning the high speed in till you find the right spot for best running, that will be some place about 1/2 turn open.

This is an air cooled motor so you will want to mix your oil at a 8oz per gallon mixture. Use an oil designed for chainsaws and such and not water cooled outboard oil.

Go to the Engine FAQs forum and do "Awakening a sleeping outboard".

Thanks Sr Chief -- That will help a bunch --- Good point on the fuel mix -- I was about to use outboard motor oil .
