Up in the top secret file is instructions. My manuals differ a little from the instructions there but hey whatever works. Top secret file says never hit the flywheel, hit the center bolt. My manuals say the exact opisite. On my 56 10 horse, I just put enough pressure on it to where I felt if I went anymore, something may break, then I lifted up on the center bolt of the puller and gave her one light thump with a dead blow and she popped right off. Good luck, Ive read that some of these take a week or better to pop.

I had a sticky one on my '55 15hp

tapping with a hammer and a deadblow didn't help, an impact gun on the puller bolt knocked it right off though.

the way i was taught was to put on the puller..lift the slack out of the bairing.. and smack it with a wooden mallet..i just dont want to break something..or damage something internally..thanks i'll keep trying...

If you happen to have to hit the flywheel, a rubber mallet would be okay, but it's best to hit the center bolt on the puller, while lifting on the flywheel. I typically use a large screw driver and lift it, right where the rear mounting bolt goes for the hand starter assembly. It may require you to work at opposite sides of the flywheel to break it loose too. If you give a couple taps and it doesn't come loose, then rotate the flywheel 180 degrees and try it again.

Yea, I would pull it off and completely refurbish it. How are the coils on it?

When ever you've got a really stubborn flywheel & you're using a lot of force, it's good practice to leave the flywheel nut on a few turns to keep the flywheel from "flying" when it does finally come free.

Anyway, glad to read you got if off. Also, you may have a leaking upper main bearing seal with all the gunk you mentioned under the flywheel.

the coils look o.k. i see they dont match looks like someone replaced one.i think allot of the gunk is some of the degreaser i used to clean the little engine up..i've never worked on one with holes in the top of the flywheel before, and i could'nt see the top of the flywheel because the recoil was blocking my view..... i had planned on going thru the ignition any ways so no harm done.....does any one out there know for sure what years ignition points are interchangeable.?and i need a couple knobs for my little carburator.

Re: 1954 Johnson 25 flywheel removal problems

all Johnson/Evinrudes used the same igniton components. Any magneto igntion "tune up" kit will work. You can search and purchase it right here at iboats for about $30. Look here. It's a tune up kit for a '55 25hp, but should work fine. That's what's so great about these old gems. They all used the same igniton parts for decades. You can buy coils here too, if you need them. Might have to check ebay for the knobs. good luck. Keep us posted.
