Hi Tooling,
Sounds to me like you may have an issue with the lower driveshaft. That motor has a 2-piece driveshaft, with the lower portion containing a spring clutch that is supposed to slip if you hit something. However, they can break over time and when they do they can bind up inside the lower unit houseing when you put a load on it, .ie going from neutral to forward.
Another thing to check for is that you're running on both cylinders. Sometimes a motor that is only running on one won't have enough nuts to it to keep running with a load.
Great little motors - worth putting a little TLC into them...
- Scott

I should have mentionioned it runs fine in drive or reverse if you start it in gear. It just stalls when shifting.

Are you throttling down before shifting? My 58 Johnson 18 hp is finicky that way...have to know the sweet spot on the throttle/grip and slow it down to that mark before you move the shift lever. Gets cranky if you don't.

Thanks, Chinewalker you hit it on the nose. The spring clutch was broken. Should be back in the water in no time at all.
