I hi i have a 1955 johnson QD-16 10hp outboard and i am trying to switch it over to a single line fuel line.
Ok so here i go

my pump is from a John Deere riding mower 25hp so it should be big enough i have good pulse but it just isn't drawing it up the hose
I also ran new fuel lines.
I started with the vac hose block then after that didnt work i taped the motor and installed a pulse barb
I drilled and taped the side plate on the motor and installed a nipple for my pulse port
I blocked the passage from the old pressure port nipple.
I also took the little filter in the carb bowl out and put a filter in the fuel line from the tank.
I have tried 3 primer bulbs and they all do the same thing there is a little back flow with the check valve.

when i pump the primer bulb it fills the carb. then it starts up clean ( no sputtering, kicking, revving )then it hiccups and then acts like its running out of gas and reeves then stalls/dies also after it dies i can pump the primer bulb a few times like it just used the fuel that I pumped into the carb. I then installed a clear fuel filter and can see what is happening I can fill the filter and as it runs the fuel gets sucked out of the filter but never pulls new fuel into the filter so when the filter is empty it dies. I made sure that the tank and the internals were all working and started the motor and it runs until the the fuel filter is empty. i changed the primer bulb thinking that the primer was not holding enough pressure and I shortened the hose thinking that the longer hose would need more drawing power but that didn't work so i picked up the tank after I started it and fuel filled the filter and the motor kept running without having to pump the primer bulb
I have hooked up the hose to the pump directly and bypassed the fuel fitting and still not enough suction to pull fuel into the filter
also I put the end of the hose directly into a gas can thinking that there would be no resistance don't know but I've done everything that i can to make this work.

Ok so I've tried everything i can think of and now i'm stuck please help

you may be asking that pump to "lift" the fuel higher than it's capable of...can you position the fuel source to within 16" or so height wise from the fuel pump and does this make a difference?

Re: 1955 Johnson 10hp conversion problems please help

I have tried different heights and it wont draw at all only when the tank is higher than the motor

Thank you for the quick reply

Does the primer bulb get firm when you squeeze it? If not then, the fuel pump's diaphragm may have a hole in it. If it does get firm, then the pump is probably ok, in which case I'm thinking you may have an air leak somewhere else in the line. Here are some links on the conversion that may help.

Did you do the suck/blow test on the pump to confirm it functions and is plumbed correctly? Setting the tank higher than the motor only sets up a siphon and will feed the carb even without a pump attached.

Re: 1955 Johnson 10hp conversion problems please help

I have not used the John Deere pump, but as mentioned above, Im not certain it is plumbed right? Is it marked, or did you use the suck/blow as mentioned by nwcove? You should be able to suck, but not blow into the outlet, blow but not suck out of the inlet. The other will be pulse.

Also, ensure the vent is clear in the tank. Does taking the cap right off help>? Ill assume you removed your modifications to the intake manifold?

I did do the suck blow method and it is plumbed correctly
and yes i did remove to earlier mod
also taking the cap off did not help

Pump has to be NFG then. Did you buy it new?

I would try and shorten the impulse line from by pass cover to fuel pump.

I also took the little filter in the carb bowl out and put a filter in the fuel line from the tank.

Is the filter just one that you had or is it matched/compatible with the JD fuel pump? Try running it without that filter. Good luck!

Re: 1955 Johnson 10hp conversion problems please help

.... so i picked up the tank after I started it and fuel filled the filter and the motor kept running without having to pump the primer bulb

since it runs good with gas going DOWN to the bowl the the pump is not pumping enough.

I have a QD on a Mikuni and drilled bypass and a FD on a OMC pump over and aluminum plate on a bypass cover .... both work fine
maybe reed valves not closing properly to built up pressure enough on the pulse line

try relocating pulse line to the other bypass cover location (switch covers) and relocate the pump temporalily to test for proper vacum and pressure pulse

Re: 1955 Johnson 10hp conversion problems please help

if it were me id also take that inline filter out of the mix for now. the pump may not be able to pull fuel through it as well as it would push fuel through a filter on the outlet side. jmo

I also took the little filter in the carb bowl out and put a filter in the fuel line from the tank.

IMHO you should have some sort of filter between the fuel pump and carb, either OEM or aftermarket. Good luck!

+1 a little inline fuel filter is a good idea. I use one like in the pic below without any adverse effects. I installed it in the fuel line running from the pump to the carb. Not only does it filter the fuel, but it lets me actually see the fuel flow as well. You can get one at any auto parts store for about $3.

No particular part number, or brand. It's just a generic in-line fuel filter from the auto parts store that costs about $3.
