Like it says, a rescued 1955 3hp, just opened her up today and all the usual culprits. Really bad coils, points ugly, carb full of Aunt Jamima's syrup, you know the drill.

But the doc (me) was in today, and a few parts later, she is singing in the tank.

Problem: at idle, the stator plate is walking (toward slow speed naturally) and I can't find a collar screw to tighten to stop it.

Is there one??? Once I actually bent the wave washer just a little - under the plate (on an old Johnson 3hp) to stop it from walking, but I want to know if this motor is missing something before do a fix like that.

The wave washer is what stops it from rotating, is the washer still waved or flattened?

I have not gone under the stator yet to check the wave washer, but now that I know there is not a collar to tighten, I will do that later today.

What I did before is GENTLY bend the whole thing maybe a quarter inch or less, then re-install in a con-cave posture, and it fixed the problem.

Is the movement a result of the magnetic pull from the flywheel ?? That would make sense to me.

I would suspect from vibration and the rotation of the motor.

IF the coils are dragging on the magnets, it will rotate toward off. Adjust them if they are. Otherwise, increase the bend a bit at each of the wave washer curves. There is no other friction adjustment.

you guys were right, when I took the flywheel off to remove the stator, I noticed that there was a tiny bit of drag (marks) on the new paint on the new coils. I made the adjustment, and I also used my little Ryobi to polish the inside of the flywheel where the magnet is. There was a tiny bit of rust-looking build-up there. Put her back togther, WAM problem gone.

My guess is the tollerance between the magnet and the coil is maybe 3 thousandths? (5 at the most) wow

this little 1955 runs very well at very low RPM, something I like to see. I think this one is a candidate for complete restoration. all the tin is there with no dents and there are no missing parts whatsoever. nice for 50.00
Pic coming.

Those are great little motors. Run like a top and quiet, too.

The coils need to be bang on as far as lining up with the standoffs on the magneto plate, glad to see it's resolved. The airgap can only be so much or spark would be weak.

Fixed one in the summer, awesome motors, hope you replaced the wires with the coils.

Wires and boots are sitting in a box. It is on my list. My next step will be to completely dismantle, and begin the prep on each part for primer and paint.
I need to find a gasket set, and I know already where to get the paint and decals.

Did you do a cosmetic refurbish, or mechanical?

Was just a guy in town who brought it to me for repair, only ran on 1 cylinder.

I usually use a utility knife blade to line the coils up with that stepped surface and make sure it has 100% contact with the coil face and the machined surface. If you get it set like that, you'll have the perfect setting on those coils.
