at the present time i am waiting for plugs, points and coils that i ordered to arrive. intne mean time i noticed that oil is leaking from the prop. shaft, after filling the lower end with oil. it's a drop every now and then. do i have to drop the lower end to replace the seal/o ring or can it be done by removing the prop. at present i don't have a manual for this model.the SELOC manual only goes back to the 1956 year. does anyone know where i can find a manual for this 1955 rde-17s model. thanks, john.

I would pull it and replace all seals, and look close at the bearings. Its older than mine (1958) but if its a "split case" you may be able to change the output seal without pulling the lower unit. BUT, if you have not changed the impeller in the last year or two, it would be a good idea to do so.

The '56 coverage of the SELOC manual will cover your motor, as there wasn't a whole lot of difference between the '55 25hp and the '56 30hp - at least in regards to basic service stuff. It's not a huge job to replace the seals in the unit, and I recommend you replace all of them - propshaft, driveshaft and shift rod. A kit should run you about $20-$30 and will contain all the seals, o-rings, etc. you'll need....
- Scott

Your gearcase is pretty well identical to later models, so the '56-70 Seloc will work fine for you. If you want a manual specific to your engine then get an OEM manual. They are the best. You can get them from one of the following places:
TheOutboardWizard
Mastertech
Marine Engine
Ken Cook
Refering to page 8-44 of your Seloc manual, you'll have to remove the seal retainer in order to remove the prop seal. In order to remove the seal retainer, you'll need to remove the lower housing (the cap). To reassemble the lower unit, you'll need some sealant (I've used Permatex Aviation sealant for this rather than 1000 Sealer), a new spagetti seal for the cap, and a new o-ring for the seal retainer. Ignore the Seloc instruction to use silicone at the but ends of the spagetti seal, and use the OEM method of cutting the seal about 1/32" longer than fits in the 'track'.
Iboats has 18-2686 which has everything you need. Cost is about $17.
Good luck!
