I just removed the lower unit from my 1955 25 hp Johnson. The gears look good, the clutch dog is a little rounded on the drive side but I can turn it 180*. My question is: can the upper bronze drive shaft bushing be replaced? It looks like it can. The drive shaft wobbles quite a bit so I know replacing the shaft seal would be a waste of time. I have all the parts for a rebuild but I don't want to have a lower that leaks.

RDE 17 not a 19

Drive shaft bushing is 304084, about thirty bucks from a dealer.

EDIT: I assume you are sure the bushing is worn? With the gears out, the pinion is not seating in the Timken bearing above it. The lower end of the drive shaft is located in the pinion. So if the pinion is slopping around in the Timken, the lower end of the shaft will move too.

I'm sure it's worn. I understand what you are saying about the pinion. The bushing is scored up pretty good. Thanks.
