I am working on taking the crankcase cover off so i can examine the pistons and change the rings and do basic maintenence to the block. However, the flat head screws that hold the crank case on are stuck! i have tried penetrating oil with no success. What should I try next? Also, the manual says you can remove the upper crankshaft seal after you loosen the crank case cover or you can do it before with a special tool. I dont have the tool and was wondering what yall's success was the other way. thanks a bunch!

Re: 1955 'rude crank case cover STUCK

Evinrude made a lot of different outboard motors in 1955. It would help if you could give us some idea which one you have. It would help even more if you had the manual for your outboard.

It's a mistake to take the crankcase apart to change upper seals unless you have some more serious problem. I'm betting you haven't pulled the powerhead, right? If so, it ain't coming apart.

Help us with enough information to help you, please.

Re: 1955 'rude crank case cover STUCK

sorry about the omission of the details. it is a 7.5 hp model 7518. I have a seloc manual for the 1956 version (iboats forum said they were almost identical). I have removed the power head and gasket, the carburetor an intake manifold, the exhaust cover and inner plate, and the intake covers. (all for cleaning). What i was asking is i am having trouble litterally turning the screws. I am a total newbie to engine repair so the learning curve is huge. my reason for taking out the crankcase cover is to remove the pistons and check the cylinders and pistons for wear. what should i do?

You can get a good look at the pistons and cylinders just by pulling the cylinder head. That's as far as I'd go. Finding pistons, rings, etc. for that old engine is going to be a challenge, if they're needed, and the cost will far exceed the value of the engine, I'm afraid.

Odds are good that you don't need to disassemble the entire engine. If the cylinder walls are badly scored, you're going to be pretty much out of luck, and should probably hunt for another engine and use yours as a parts donor.

I'd leave the crankcase alone, frankly. Just pull the cylinder head and see what you find there.

I agree with CAT. Don't open it unless you have to. Also, that motor doesn't have an upper crankcase seal. It has an oil slinger. The lower crankcase seal sits on top of the driveshaft. Check the compression before you get too carried away. Anywhere from 60-100 psi is fine.

thanks for the advice. I think i will just replace the exhaust inner plate and a few gaskets and leave the powerhead alone unless there are major problems when i start it and I have to figure out if it is worth opening it or not. (i cant wait for that)

As Wayne said, check the compression before going any farther. It will tell you a lot.
