1956 10 hp johnson lower unit removal?

Hey guys. can anyone tell me how to remove the lower unit to get at the water pump. i removed the 5 bolts and it dropped about an inch but then its stuck. im sure someone asks this frequently so once i post this ill look at the links it creates at the bottom of the post. Thanx alot! Erik

remove plate on the side of the leg, remove bottom bolt on shift connector

hey thank you. ooops! i went outside and saw that cover and i undid the upper bolt. is this bad or no biggie? it worked. Thank you

I don't feel that it is an issue that you took the upper bolt out. A trick that I have used is to hold the lower unit portion of the shift shaft and push down on the shift lever lightly to seat the shaft into the coupler. A little grease helps with this. I like to also coat the top of the drive shaft with some grease as well. Hope this helps.
