How does the magneto cam come off to replace the top seal. This old girl was leaking and threw oil, the flywheel was stuck really well. Does this come off with a puller? Or is this baked oil? any suggestions. thanks dom

Dombarb,
You need a harmonic balancer puller and 3 #8hardened 1/4-20 threaded bolts to pull the flywheel. Don't hammer it. If it's stuck hard even with the balancer puller on it, put a good bind with a wrench on the puller bolt and rap it gently on the top of the puller bolt with a hammer.
The magneto cam should slide off the crankshaft with a lttle help from a lever on both sides. Be gentle because those cams are hard and very brittle metal and break EASY.
Then, save yourself a major pain and take it to a dealer who has the special tool to pull it. I"ve done 2 of 'em without any special tools and it was a pain and luckily I didn't nick the crankshaft seal surface which would ruin the motor. trust me, it's worth it. If your like me and don't have a dealer, I'll tell you how I did it but it's not the right way and I am embarrassed to tell it. F-R says to be sure someone didn't grease up the shaft and let the shaft sling grease/oil everywhere before you change it to be sure it actually is the upper crank seal. I like to put a little l.u. oil on top of the seal and turn the flywheel. If the seal is leaking, the compression will push air out the seal and make bubbles all through the oil on the seal.
Good luck,
JBJ

You pulled the whole crankcase apart and have the crankshaft out by itself and still can't get it off? Is that correct? Wow, it should come off pretty easy. Don't know on that one. I'll be interested to see what happens,
sorry for the no help,
JBJ

Agree, it should slide right off. Wonder what's holding it, rust??

Weird. It does sound like the engine has been taken apart. Maybe a photo?

Re: 1956 15 hp evenrude top seal replacement

JBJ Steve and FR, I finally got it off. I used the gear puller and two carriage bolts. I took a picture of the set up but I can't figure out how to post the picture! I think it was just stuck on pretty well and I have never removed a cam. I have completed the assembly of the powerhead, primer and paint are next. If you can direct me to the instructions for posting pictures I will get it done . I am getting closer to making this old girl make some smoke. Thanks to all ....Dom How do I make the file size smaller? It is to big???

Re: 1956 15 hp evenrude top seal replacement

Dom,
Here's how I do it. I'm no expert so this is about all I can tell you. I save my pics from my dig. camera onto my laptop. Then, I right click on my pictures and click on "open with", then photoshop premier. Then "edit", then save as, give it a name and choose "web blog" and compress it a little too. See if your computer has these options when you right click. Or you can go to an online free program---just google search one and you can use "compression" on 'em. Then, I use the paperclip icon on the above toolbar in iboats or the "manage attachments" icon below. Then browse for your pic, then attach.
I don't know what your computer has so it's tough to write reasonable instructions. Glad you got it fixed! F-R is pretty slick with pics, I'll bet he can tell you better.
Later,
JBJ

I use photoshop to resize and write on the photos and stuff. I know you aren't going to rush out and buy that $$ program. And it takes a rocket genius to learn how to use it. I only know a little bit about how to use it and am no rocket genius.

I use irfanview.com

It's a great free program that is easy to use and does a lot of stuff including resizing etc.
