I ran this motor today for first time, just got it, motor is converted with a fuel pump for use with modern tank, i did not have the quick connect on the gas tank end so i just put the hose into the tank for pick up , also the hose has a inline marine filter on it, i use it for my v4 110 omc which runs very good, ok so i start the motor and it runs good for awhile, then it starts to sputter then stall, i pump the primer bulb and choke it and it starts runs good for a minute or so then stalls. could the hose be too big or could it be from not having the quick connect on it, puzzeled!

Try pumping the primer while running. If it continues to run without stalling as long as you keep the ball primed, could be the pump is going south.

i did notice that the glass fuel bowl was not completely full at times, i tried to drain the carburetor (and did) but i removed a small brass screw, and it fell of course, do you know where i can get another one? also should the glass bowel be filled with fuel all the time to the point where you cannot see it low ?

it is on the carb a little brass screw, wander if i can get it at a napa store, guess i have to take carb of engine, I really did not want to do that but maybe it needs to be cleaned out anyway, ps, when the motor ran it ran pretty good, wandering how bad could carb be ?

If you can't find the brass plug/screw locally, drop me a line...

As for the problem - is the vent open on the tank?

To test the fuel pump, prime up the carb with the bulb, then remove the fuel line at the carburetor. Run it into a coffee can and start the motor, noting whether or not fuel pumps into the can as the motor runs. Do this outdoors with plenty of ventilation - not indoors in a barrel...

Thanks for all the information, what i did was jury rigged the gas line for now, i took the gas line off my water seperator and just put the end of the hose into the tank, also it was leaking at the qiuck disconnent side to the motor, maybe that was causing problems, Scott, do you think i could get that brass plug at a hardware store, i would have to remove the carb to find the right fit !!

Yeah, the brass plug can be made from a bolt if you want. I'd stick with brass, though. Get a bolt of the correct thread and cut it off about the length of the original. Cut a slot into it with a hacksaw or a dremel tool and you've got a plug. Put a dab of sealant on the threads when you install it, though....

Any leaks in the system can cause the problem you noted. The pump would draw air....

Concerning the question about the fuel filter, they never do run full of gas. In fact they always run nearly empty. Don't ask me how that's possible. Just one of the wonders of nature, I guess. Awesome, huh?

check that the fuel pickup line is not flat on the bottom of the fuel tank ... another thing to check for is if you have a fuel primer bulb , if any dirt gets around the check valve , it could keep the check valve from seating ..( which will let the fuel run back down into the tank..) there are times that if an engine has not been used for a long time , i have seen where the fuel has coated the fuel filter, dried up which can restrict the fuel flow .. i would try to run engine without the fuel filter, to see if that would solve the problem ..last thing check fuel pump diaphrams , make sure there is no holes or cracks...
