I posted a question a few days ago, which was answered (Thanks!), about the possibility of replacing the gears of my '56 15hp Johnson with those of a 12hp Gale-made Sea King of around the same age. The answer was that the gears could probably be swapped as a set, but not necessarily as individuals. I now have ascertained that the Sea King is a '57 model, and I was wondering if that new, more specific information would alter the answer.

Is it still likely that the gears would swap? I'd have looked inside the gear cases myself, but work since coming back from vacation has left me with almost no free time - especially on weekends. :(

If I didn't own the business, I'd look for an easier job.

I'll take the lack of response as meaning that knowing the year of the donor motor doesn't make a difference in the previous reply.

Thanks, I guess.

Take my guidance with a grain of salt and it will turn your motor into a brand new E-Tec!
In my opinion, if the gear assembly fits into the housing correctly, and the shift rod connects correctly, and meshes with the pinion gear correctly, it will work fine.:)

See, the thing is, it is a hard question to answer.
1956 Johnson 15hp uses gear set part number 376485
1957 Sea King 12hp, model GG9005A, also uses gearset 376485
However...
1957 Sea King 12hp, model GG8971B uses gearset 377068

We come back to the same conclusion, it may work as a set if it fits, but maybe not as individual parts.

I took a perfect gear set from a 1956 12hp Gale, which actually belonged to a late 60s motor, and swapped it with the gears from a 1973 25hp Johnson. the johnson runs great now. You have to use everything, prop shaft, forward gear, clutch dog, reverse, and pinion gear. There may be a thrust washer that goes with the pinion gear too.

Hmmm. My Sea King is a GG9016C. The serial is 75Xallscratchedupandhardtoread.
