Have a 56 15HP and the little gears in the arm are kind of stripped out, how easy is this to repair, and are the parts relatively cheap or used on a lot of other older johnson motors?

Thanks

Pretty tough to find a new tiller arm for that sweet little twin. I've seen tiller arms on eBay quite a few times. You might want to visit Twin Cities Outboard as well. They have tons of old engines and they sell used parts. I can almost guarantee that they'll have your tiller arm.

Just search for Twin Cities Outboard on Google.

Same tiller parts used on the 10, 15, 18 horse models from about 1956 to the early 1970s... That ought to broaden your search a bit. Try local sources first - they're not an uncommon part...

- Scott

I had the same problem with my 56 15hp. You can contact Stone & sons Marine in Houston. 713-686-3011 or email at stone@outboard-parts.com. They had all the parts I needed to repair my tiller handle and they were very reasonable and easy to work with. They even emailed me parts diagrams of the handle assy. Hope this helps..

The gears come match-drilled on their shafts, so you replace both the gear and shaft as a unit. There are two types of the gears, stamped and cast. You can use either (cast are better), but cannot mix them. The 5.5 thru 18 all use the same one in the tiller handle, but the one in the steering bracket varies in length.

You can pick your parts up at almost any good marine dealer in the parts department. but it does matter what state you live in. I live in Wisconsin where most of the engines are made and I never have had a problem getting a part. My Super Fast Twin 15 HP is a 1953 and runs great after I rebuilt it. I didn't want to spend the big bucks on the presurized fuel tank so I ported the block and put a diaphram fuel pump on it and went with a new tank.
