Hi all;
i have a 1956 7.5 evinrude fleetwin . This motor is like new with very few hours on it. Here is my problem. When it sits for a few days it will not start. If you pull the plugs out they are both dry -- no fuel getting to them. If I squirt a little fuel in and put the plugs back in it will start right away and run like a top. Once I get it going it will start again no problem. The starting issue only happens after it sits a few days.Hope someone out there can give me some advice. Thanks in advance.

Strange that it runs well once you get it going, but here goes anyway: Those motors always have bad coils unless they have already been replaced. Have yours been? They masquerade as all kinds of wierd problems, mostly in starting.

Yes!! i have replaced the coils, impeller , gaskets etc. I know its strange that it runs well after you get it going. The fuel is just not getting to the plugs after it sits.

I really wish I had a better answer than the one I've got, but I don't so here goes...

Did you rebuild the carb along with everything else? Are you priming the tank enough? Do you have it set too lean?

My 1956 7.5 hp fires up on half a pull. Yours should too.

Here goes...

With the cover open or off, look for the glass bowl under the carb. Now start priming the gas tank... see anything filling? Keep pushing on the button untill it is quite hrd to push. Open your choke all the way. turn your upper needle (low speed) in and gently seat it... Now back it off no more than 1 1/2 turns. Gently seat you lower needle (high speed) and then back that off 1 turn. Now with the choke out give at least 1 good pull. If you hear it almost start, push choke all the way in an quickly try again. Also keep checking the pressure on that fuel tank button. You may find that your tank is not delivering fuel as it should... You could try checking the hose by removing it and blowing some air through the lines... YOu must carefully depress thesmall valve and keep your eyes protected for the fuel that will blow out. Hopethis helps..

Ok. now if it starts, take it out to the water and go wide open. begin turning you lower needle in slowly, 1/8 turn at a time and let it adjust... keep doing this until it starts to show that it is slowing your rpms. then go back about 1/4 turn finding your sweet spot but favoring the richer setting. Now it is time for your upper needle ( low speed ). Some people set this in neutral, I prefer forward... anyway, bring your throttle down to the point where it will still barely idle. then start turning your upper needle in 1/8 turn at a time allowing it to adjust. keep lowering and adjusting until she won't go any lower. There now as Ron Popiel says "set it and forget it" You should not have to mess with them much from there.

I apreciate everyone taking the time to try and help me here. Will try again today. To the best of my knowledge the carb is set right -- I do not understand why I am not getting gas to the plugs-- As i said before if I spray some fuel in there it starts fine.-- But I will see how today goes. Thanks all for your input.

If it runs well at all speeds after you get it started, there is nothing wrong with the carb or induction system. You are getting fuel into the carb bowl when you pump it up aren't you? The only thing left is the choke and/or throttle synchronization. But that's all so simple that there isn't much to go wrong with it. If you are looking for wet plugs, forget it. They aren't supposed to be wet. Wet plugs would mean it is flooded.
