waiting on a factory manual but do i remove the ph to remove the lu? the lu dropped about a half inch and i dont see a shift coupler or a access hatch so i can remove the shift lever to drop the lu.
thanks for any tips

Yep, on that model you have to pull the powerhead which is pretty quick and easy, plus you have to disconnect the shift rod once you pull the powerhead. Also a good time to change the carbon seal before you put the powerhead back on.

As stated, pay attention to how the carbon seal assemby is assembled, and replace as needed. It keeps water from getting into your powerhead, so is important.

Dont let pulling the powerhead scare you, it is pretty straightforward. Just disconnect the fuel line, disconnect the brass arm at the top of the tower that advances the magneto, and remove the standard screws holding the powerhead on. YOull need to rock it a bit to get it off, then just lift straight up. Then there will be 2 nuts and a star washer to remove to allow the shift rod to slide down. Put a bolt back in the gearcase to take the weight off.

You should always install a new 303355 gasket and 303347 o-ring, and any other parts of the carbon seal assembly that are not 100%.

You also probably will need a new powerhead gasket. That stuff is available here at iboats

Is the 7516 in the thread title the model number of the motor?
If so, your motor was made in 1954.
