Hello all,
I am new to the boating thing. I know little more than how to start an outboard and get going. I have good mechanical knowlege about cars, so the basic engine mechanics is no problem.

I bought my grandpa's boat from my grandma. My grandpa passed away 9 years ago and the motor hasen't been ran since. The serial # is 10012 08643. I went to pull the rope and the motor was seized up. I then took the head off and sprayed some penetrant and got the motor to turn freely. I was a little afraid to just put the head back on and hit the lake, so I went ahead and took the motor apart. I have a few ?'s if you folks don't mind to help.

The rod bearings are needle bearings and they seemed a little loose, not terribly, but if you grabbed the rod they would twist a little. Is that OK?

I called a local outboard shop, and they said parts were unavailable. Is that true? He also said that the old evinrudes had to be ran at a 16:1 mix because of the bushing in the block needing a lot of oil. Is that right?

What kind of gasket maker do you use on the block halfs and the block to lower unit surfaces?

Also is the typical 15hp carb swap that I read about possible on this unit?

Is shaving the head to gain a little compression a good way to get a little more power?

All I have ever worked on is cars, so a two stroke engine is a new game to me. Is there any other way to gain some power without losing reliabity?

One last thing. While the motor is off, is there anything else that should be looked at or replaced?

Thanks for any help.

JonBoatMan.... Fuel mixture on that engine is 25/1 (1qt 50/1 oil to 6gal gas).

Sealer for block halves= Marprox Sealer 1000, also available under the brand name of Boat Armor which also states Sealer 1000 on the tube.

Gasket sealer= Use the type gasket sealer that comes in a can that has a small brush attached to its screw off cap.

DO NOT use any sealer on carburetor gaskets, intake manifold gaskets, or the head gasket. Use only oil on those gaskets. If the gaskets are of the newer type that have a glossy type coating, use nothing as they would be self sealing type gaskets.

Rod bearings= As long as they and/or the journals are not rusty or pitted, or burnt blue, consider them to be normal. Just be sure that the rod caps are installed properly (matched to the rod they came off of), and that you can feel nothing where they are joined when tightened.

Shaving cyl head= Not a good idea as that could (and most likely would) cause pre-ignition which will destroy pistons.

Swapping carburetors on that model is not an option.

Be satisfied with having your Granpa's engine restored to its prime and normal condition. Attempting to increase its power will result in failure.

I'd suggest installing a new complete water pump kit, and changing the lower unit lube. DO NOT remove a philips screw if it exists in that lower unit as that would be a pivot point for the shift linkage. Use what is called "HiVis" (80/90w) lube which is available at K-Mart, Wal*Mart, or your local dealership in that lower unit. Also, dismantle, clean, and rebuild the carburetor with a complete carburetor kit.
