Hello,
I posted a while back about my 10 horse. I finally got it running.

I have 2 ?'s

1. At low idle it has this wierd hesitation. It is like a hiccup or a sneeze--real sudden and it just about kills the motor everytime. I tried playing with the low speed mixture with no change.
At high speeds it runs great. COuld it be in the ignition? What should the points be set at, and what spark plugs should I run?

2. THe motor cover has a bad rattle in it. Is there any adjustment for the cover to make the latches latch tighter?

Thanks for any help

Hi jon....

Not sure what all you did to the engine but it sounds like a lean sneeze. Did you rebuild the carb?

The ignition system could make the engine run like this. Not sure about the correct spark plugs though. Points are set at .020 on high cam. Also check over the motor for possible air leaks. Keep us posted. I'll check on the plugs and let ya' know.

Hi Jonboat
About the low idle sneeze. These motors are famous for this. I don't think there is a way to completly stop it. But you can cut it way down to a minimum. Lets assume your ignition is in good shape with the points set at .020 with the J6J champion plugs (now J6C) set to .030. Every thing elese is correct also. To idle real slow advance the throtle just a little. This advances the timing a little. The motor will speed up a little. Ok now richen the low-speed needle just a little, now this should slow the motor to the point your almost going backwards. It will still sneeze once in a while, kind of softly. I believe this is do to the presure dropping in the tank. This system seams to troll best with the tank 1/4 to 3/4 full. This area is one that you will just have to get the feel for. Just remember to make adjustments small and wait a minute after each adjustment. Make sure the packing nuts on both needles are nice and snug, you don't want an air leak there. If you would like a copy of a period owners manual (its for a johnson 10hp) post your email and I will send you one. Now about that bonnet rattling. If you look closely you will see rubber bumpers between the halves or where they should be. If they are missing or no longer working, be creative. Also make sure the big rubber bumpers are on the motor where the sides hang. This is a little hard for me to describe. Ok now on the hinge there should be a rubber tie-down with a hook on the end. You will see a notch in the recoil starter housing, that is where the hook goes. If this stuff is missing (and it usually is)make one up with inner tube, etc. Now things sould be tighting up. One last adjustment, ever so carefuly bend the catches just a wee bit. Remember with the new little bumpers you made to stick in the holes between the halves, you won't need to bend much if at all. I think I have some drawings of this stuff I'send them along also.
