Hey guys. loved the look of this engine. Bought off ebay for 290 and he ran it for me and it started on the fourth pull. Ran great. Put it in F & R no problems. He told me to top off the lower unit before taking my wife and kids on lake michigan but that the oil was clean. I guess water is clean. Popped off the lower screw and it had a green washer on it. Top had no washer. Water came out as well as milky oil. New to this. What should be my next steps?
Thanks.

Ok find away to get about 5lbs of compressed air into the lower unit and submerge in a tub and or bucket you get the idea, now watch for bubbles that will tell you from where its or what seal is leaking! Good luck and let us know what happens!

Change oil replace both drain plug gaskets and run, then check again for water in lower. If so then pressure/vac test for leaks.
The gasket missing may just be the reason for water intrusion.

"What next"?? Hope he didn't run it for long with that clear "oil". It will cause severe wear to the bushings, some of which are not replaceable. In turn, wear of the bushings causes severe wear of the gear teeth, and eventually complete trash.

Ok like this idea. Sounds reasonable that if a gasket is required on both it might be the cause. Now where would I find one? Do I just size it up at a hardware or is there a place to get the specific part?
Thks

those vent and drain plug gaskets are available from iboats, dealer, most any marine repair shop..$2 or less...word of caution...was offered 2 drain plug screws with o rings..Quicksilver...$10/ea.!..had to pass...further word of caution... pay particular heed to what F_R has said...he "schooled" me with a 1958 evinrude 10 hp. that had teeth missing on the pinion gear <it had a cup of water and tbsp of oil in the LU>...don't intend to sound alarmist ,but before you take the wife and kids out on Lake Michigan, it might be wise to have a long shake down cruise solo...best of luck and I hope your motor does well...

Wasn't washer and with all the rusty oil and water that came out I think im gonna follow duckworks recommendation and use lubriplant. 105 grease this summer til I can find a replacement lu. Ill look for a parts engine first. Id hate to sink a load of money on seals into a rusted out lu.

I have a '56 J15 on my boat right now. Runs great. But definitely change the LU oil and check it often.
