Ok. I picked one up last year hoping to use it, but the seller didn't tell me that the lower unit had water in it so I didn't have money to fix it. Now I do, but when I went to the marina they told me that it is probably was the drive shaft and that its impossible to fix. Does that sound right? It runs great, but after running a few minutes the lower unit is filled with water? Thanks.

Everything is fixable with money!

I would start by disassembling the gear case and inspect for wear...then reseal entire case with proper seals if the gear case is still serviceable.

Being that it had water...a whole list of horrors can be had.

Disassemble...then post a few pics of what you find.

Did these guys even look at it? How do they know the driveshaft is bad and that that is where the water is coming in? I agree wth Mas - take it apart and check it out...

A seal kit is not expensive ($20-25) but you'll need a few tools to do the job. A hook-shaped seal puller is about $10-15, and you'll need that to change the driveshaft seal. You need a special punch to remove the shift rod bushing/O-ring. F_R on here makes them and sells them. A standard punch and a hammer is usually all you need to replace the propshaft seal.

If it fills with water after only a few minutes run time, you have a Major leak.

Thats a great motor and uses the 5 bolt lower. I'd look for a used lower, there are plenty around.
