Hi Guys,
I have a 56' evinrude 30 hp with a 5" extension making it a 20" and I'm going to need to take the extension out. I'm thinking its not going to be a hard thing to do. Is it just a 5" extension on the top of the shaft? I've never had it apart so I'm not really sure. I've had a 59' lark 35 hp apart and I'm thinking there probably not a big difference. Any info before I tackle the job would be nice. I know I have to remove the housing extension as well. thanks in advance for any info.

Housing, drive shaft, shift rod, water tube all have to be shortened/replaced since they're too long for a short-shaft motor.

The driveshaft is actually longer - not an extension. The shift rod may or may not be longer - most had a 5-inch brass extended shift rod connector, but some had a longer shift rod. Water tube can be shortened by taking out exactly 5-inches. The housing is the easiest part - simply remove the extension housing.

If you have the long shift rod you can cut it off. Measure down exactly 5 inches from the present notch and file a groove with a chainsaw file for the connector screw. Then saw 5 inches off the rod.
