Hi guys,
I've got a 1956 evinrude I just put on my boat with new controls and cables. I worked the controls to check the cables and found that the throttle would only go to the fast position in reverse. What have I got wrong or is it possible that I have a counter rotating motor? The guy I bought the motor from told me he bought this motor and another as a pair. Any help would be appreciated.

remove the cover, and check the throttle limiter stop. that keeps the throttle from being moved past start when in neutral, the shift linkage may not be moving if in forward.

It is not supposed to go all the way to wide open throttle in reverse. What're you doing, entering the big backwards race?

Do what FR and TD said and also try unhooking the cables and manually running the throttle and shifter though their ranges to see if it was a cable issue.

And, no, it is not a counter-rotating motor. No such animal...

Thanks for the suggestions, but I figured it out. It was just the way I was working the controls( evinrude dual lever simplex ). I found that you have to pull the throttle towards slow before shifting in forward. I'm learning as I go and sometimes I may ask a stupid question or two so please bare with me. thanks
