I have a 1956 5.5 that has compression of 65/65, which it builds in 2 pulls. Motor needs a carb kit, is it worth it??

try pulling it a couple more times .... i have the same exact motor and it takes four or five and it goes to 95psi ... honestly thats still pretty good because mines supposedly only got 30 hours on it so .... it also might benifit from a good decarb personally i think the 20 bux it cost for a kit is worth it but im kinda partial to these old rudes

are the cylinders dry? a few drops of oil in the bores should make a difference. its definitely worth 20 bucks for the kit if it has good spark (i have a cd 13 that has 90 on the top......but only 30 on the bottom......if i could find oversized pistons and rings id hone it out and restore it. just bought a cd 14 that runs....and picked up a carb kit and impeller for it today).
have you tried to get it to run at all? the rings may be a little bit gummed up. im told a product called seafoam works wonders. id put a few drops of fuel in the cyls, tighten the plugs and pull my heart out to get it to make even a short run! a puff of blue smoke can be quite encouraging.

Re: 1956 evinrude 5.5 compression

It wont run due to the mess i found in the carb. A bit of background- i just purchased the motor and a good pressure tank for 75, so basically the motor was free. I bought it as non running- no quest asked, as-is. Now, inside the carb....the float was shot, the clip holding the float needle was off, needle stuck in place, all gaskets were dried/cracked, jet needles scored/bent, sediment in bowl, and umm, o ya thats about it. So... It was shot. Rest of motor tho seems fine tho.

The ignition is good, checked spark and its good, motor did pop with carb off and fogging oil in cylinders.

Your compression is fine for a rope start on 2 pulls. 5 pulls might get higher, but tell you nothing that 65/65 doesn't tell you.

That is a fine engine. Overhaul the carb, take good care of her and she will outlast you.

pn# 439071 carb kit has everything youll need to redo that carb i wouldnt get a sierra kit as the gaskets suck and you dont get nearly the parts you get from the BRP kit i just listed

65/65 will run fine on a 5.5 and you might find those numbers go up some with use also, or as mentioned, a decarb.

Re: 1956 evinrude 5.5 compression

Yea, you typically want to give each cylinder 5 - 6 pulls on a compression test. If you get 65 on each after two pulls, that's great. As JB said, those are great motors and are built to last. Run it at 16:1 mix though. There aren't any needle bearings in that motor and they require a bit more oil in the mix. Some people will say 24:1 is good, but that is for the 10hp and bigger motors, of that vintage, which have the needle bearing set up. I run the 3's, 5 1/2's and 7 1/2's at 16:1, in the 50's vintage.

Re: 1956 evinrude 5.5 compression

Hello,

I have this same motor that I just got. A few questions on it. The guy told me to run it at 50:1 is that sound accurate on this motor? And it had the 2 speed control knobs on the front of the motor. I can't really figure out what those mean or do. I don't feel that my motor is putting out as much power as it can. What should I set those knobs to for full throttle and what do they do? Thank you so much

Well, I have the 1954 CD-11 5.5 and love it, so I would say they are worth restoring. Beyond putting a carb kit in and a new float, I do reccomend you remove the flywheel nut and the cover under it to take a peek at the coils. If they are cracked, replace them. I had to do a new impeller on mine, which required the power head to be removed, but that was a simple job. Here is a link to doing all the tasks, even tips on eliminating the dual line pressure tank(I did it) are included. Make sure you run a high grade oil ( I use Motul 800 100% synthetic ester based oil) at 25:1 because this is a bushing engine.

Hijacking someone else's thread is very rude, Jack. Run TC-W3 outboard oil at 16:1 and start your own thread if you have more questions.
