I just aquired a 1956 evinrude 30 hp model number 25022-12393. I have a million questions. It looks visually in excellent condition. I don't know history. To start: Is it worth putting money into. What is the best way to test it. What is the mixture it takes gas/oil. Iwould normally just put something this old in the dump but it seems to be in to good of shape to forget about. I plan on using it on a 1956 barbour wood boat that I will take lake fishing. Would I rather have a nice new engine to start? In other words I am not conserned about originalty of the boat.
any suggestions would be appreciated.
thanks Rand

Re: 1956 Evinrude Answers

Fuel mix is 24:1, rand. One quart of TC-W3 rated outboard oil to 6 gallons of 87 octane regular.

New water pump impeller and clean carbs. Might replace the Champion J6C plugs (gap at .030") and set magneto points at .020".

Generally, an engine that old does not justify the cost of taking it to a shop, if you can find one that will work on it. It is a self wrencher's engine. Not hard at all to work on and parts are available and not expensive. It will reward you with years of loyal, faithful service.

Be sure to get an OEM Service Manual(kencook.com) and study it thoroughly.

Good luck, and welcome to the iboats family. :)

PLEASE!!! NEVER-EVER through an old motor away. There are thousands of us that NEED THOSE PARTS. Post a free ad in your paper at the very least. But you would be surprised what you can get for something you think is junk.
Anyway, those are great old motors! Very simple, well engineered, and will last many more years with proper care. See if you have spark, clean and rebuild the carb (kits available). Probably need a new water pump impeller. Fire away with any questions you have (welcome to IBoats by the way), but post them in the Johnson/Evinrude Forum. There are many talented mechanics at this site....we can hold your hand and work ya through it. And that motor, on that boat, would be a real Classic! Go for it. Good Luck!

rand5g,
A '57 35hp Evinrude went for $1,825 on ebay yesterday. Yes, it was in very good shape. See here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...d=1,1&item=4647544736&sspagename=STRK:MEWA:IT

I have a '56 Johnson 30hp(same as Evinrude, just differenc cowl/color) and would be glad to share whatever I've learned in my effort to bring this motor back to life. Just post your questions here. Also, you might want to take a look at this http://forums.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=36;t=000033

EDIT: Better to post questions in the Johnson/Evinrude Outboard Troubles/Repair forum.

Re: 1956 Evinrude Answers

The Johnrude 30s were great motors - real stump pullers. As was noted above, if you're starting with a basically healthy motor (good compression, no missing or broken major parts) then you can probably bring it back to life. Weak spots include the coils (if they're the originals, they're going to be severely cracked.... replace them even if you have spark), and more than likely the waterpump impeller will have at least taken a set, and likely will be deteriorated. Replace it - cheap insurance. You can replace pretty much all of the consumables on that motor for about $100.00. That includes points, coils, condensers, hoses, carb kit, plugs, and waterpump impeller. If you are getting water in the lower unit, throw a seal kit in there, too.

I also highly recommend doing a decarbon once you've gotten the motor going. Sea Foam, BRP Engine Tuner, etc. will do the job. Lots of threads here on iboats regarding the process.

Good luck!
- Scott
