:confused:I finally got brave enought to chew out the drive shaft seal on my FD10 Johnson, using (as suggested on this site) a dremel tool. That worked. My question is looking at the shift seal and o-ring since I have it all apart, should that o-ring be replaced? Can it be removed and replaced without taking out the bushing? I wonder because the kit I got looks to have the small o-ring but it certainly dosen't have the bushing.
Tlhen if anyone has any suggestions on how you get way down in there and replace that o-ring I would be grateful. I believe the o-ring was one of the spots in addition to the driveshaft seal that was leaking.

I have that tool but ive also used in a pinch a threaded rod with a nut shaved down with a bench grinder just enough to fit through the hole. Then use a flat peice of steal witha a hole drilled in it for the rod ti fit through and put a nut on that end and slowly tighten till the bushing comes out. They also make a tool to reinstall it.

Sounds like the bushing can be reused then?

Most of the time the bushing is ok. Its the o ring under it that goes bad. Just make sure the bushing is not all scratched up or anything. But since you have it out and if you can get one then you should replace it just in case.

i removed the lower end of my '56 15hp to change the impeller and a steel "c" ring came down with it down around the driveshaft... Is this what we are talking about here? it is a seal? do i need to remove the whole driveshaft housing from the motor to put a new one on? can i put the oldone back? and how?

No, that's not what we are talking about. We are working with the shift rod and bushing located inside the housing holding the water pump and impeller. I don't know the part you are referring too. When I pull my drive shaft out of the power head I have a rubber o-ring in a grove on the drive shaft not a metal part.

Oh, wow. I've read on the forum about that seal. I've not replaced it but some think it is important to replace even if it's not giving any problems...but it sounds like you may be forced to do it. I thought you have to take the power head off to get at it. Donno...
