Hello all. Project keeps hitting the back burner in lieu of family outings and (work )!

My latest question has to do with replacing the coils. Upon removing them the little rubber "boot" portion that fits into a collar beneath the flywheel is stuck. I pulled on it and it broke, leaving rubber inside the collar hole. Is this normal? How do i get it out to nsert the new one? Shouldn't it just be a pressure fit?

Thanks!

Anybody know why the rubber portion of my coil is stuck into the "collar"?

Thanks!

I think the wires are threaded onto a post inside the coil "bore"

I don't think it is part of the spark plug wire ... It seems to be the same rubber tail that is on the new coils waiting to be installed. Since I am going to replace spark plg wires any way, should I pull those first to see how this whole assembly fits together? Any advice on this process?

Thanks again Bill

Can you try to post a picture?
It is tough to visualise what you are describing.

I actually tried to post a picture. But the system seemed to only allow to to upload a picture from the web and I do not have web hosting. Can I still upload a pic directly from my home computer? I have done this in the past but can't seem to do it now. Any stickys on this?

sorta sounds like you just pulled the boot in to...does the spark plug wire look like it's got a collar around it where it screws into the coil?

Re: 1956 Johnson 15 hp Rehab project Continues - Coils Question

Okay. The coil boot, or collar, was age fused (just stuck) to the spark plug wires themselves. I have them off. Now, how do i replace the spark plug wires? Do I need to remove the "plate" that the coils, points and condensors are mounted on? I do not see any hardware holding that in place.

This goes to show just how little I know about what i am doing!

Thanks guys, Bill

yup. take them off the plate. you can get new s'plug wires at most auto parts store. they usually sel it by the foot. just be sure you get copper core wires, NOT modern graphite core ones that are used on cars. It usually runs around $3-$4 a foot. 3-4 feet should be plenty. Be sure to get some new boots too. Once you get it home just cut the wires to length and be sure to twist the new wires on to the coil. that's really about it. With new wires, points and condensers, you have a virtually new ignition system that should last for years.

try googling...max wawrzyniak bringing a 1956 johnson 15 hp. back to life...his sections on the ignition should answer your questions..take pics before you begin of both the top of the armature plate and the bottom while everything is attached...the coil above the carb is for the top <no. 1 > cylinder
