The 1956 Johnson 7.5 requires power head removal in order to disconnect the gear shift mechanism to allow access to the lower unit water pump impeller. My question is, what components do I actually need to disassemble to remove the power head? The Clymer Manual says remove the carb, intake manifold and reed valve assembly, the flywheel, the armature plate, and the power head fasteners. Does all this really need to be done, or can I get by with disconnecting the carb connections and then the power head fasteners?

7.5Runner..... There's no need to dismantle the engine. Simply remove/disconnect what is obviously retaining the powerhead and remove it as an assembly. Many of those manuals assume that you're going to overhaul the powerhead and will be dismantling it anyhow.

Thanks Joe--Removing all the peripherals seemed excessive, and I can't imagine that the designers intended to make changing the water pump impeller an impossible task. Some of the same year engines had the access panel in the exhaust housing for the split shift rod....that is a much easier task...
