I am looking for some help replacing the prop shaft seal, the drive shaft seal and "Spaghetti" seal on my 1956 Johnson 30hp. Can this be done by just removing the lower section or does the whole lower unit have to come off? Any and all tips would be much appreciated.

You have to drop the lower unit to get to the driveshaft seal. As long as you're tearing into the gearcase, might as well also replace the shift rod seal. They usually go bad before the driveshaft seal. And replace the impeller at the same time.

Thanks! I should have known the answer to the driveshaft question, I already replaced the impeller, and looked right at it! How about when I tear into the lower part of the case, do i turn it over and work on it upside down? Any tricks to taking the seals out?

Thanks
