Hello all! ive been creepin on this site for a while but havent had the need to ask a question... until now

when i bought the motor, it didn't have a tiller so i sourced one out(matching year and model :O), well anyways, this is the first outboard i've been inclined to keep. its just too damn sexy and those CURVES!!

onto my question though... what the hell do the tiller gears that are in the handle connect to? i assume whatever it is runs to the carb??? its the freakin last thing i need to get to complete this darn motor!! anybody please help me :)

Not sure but it should be pretty much identical to my '54 15HP. The tiller shaft on mine connects to linkage that works the carb and controls the advance timing on the mag.

Hib. Welcome to iboats. Super cool old motor you've got there. One of the all time greats. Here are some handy links to familiarize yourself with your new toy. The teeth in the gears of the tiller should mesh with a similar set of gears on the motor. The parts catalog link below will have exploded diagrams to show you how everything goes together. Be sure to use 24:1 fuel/oil mix along with Champion J4C or J6C spark plugs. Also, these vintage motors can't be run out of the water on "muffs" so you'll need to run it in a test tank with water filled up to about 1-2 inches below the main exhaust port on the back of the motor.

The easiest test tank I've found for my '54 is an empty 1/4 oil/grease drum. Holds about 15 gal and is easy to store outside upside down. I set mine on a milk crate and it's just the right height w/ the motor hanging on my boat.

so just to be clear instead of me trying to guess xD

@kfa4303: on that last link, is the shaft labeled 75 go through the hole in the mounting bracket where the tiller connects and the gears of the back of that rod connect up with teeth from 41?

and to everyone. thanks for all your help! this truely is the #1 anything boating site! :D ive already learned about everything i need to do and a complete rebuild is probably going to happen cuz im me! :D the only other question i might have down the road is how to hook up my damn electric start but until then PULL START IT IS!!!!

yes, b that is correct. The tiller itself will have a set of brass gears which mesh with the forward set of teeth on shaft #75. On the backside of the same shaft there is another, plastic pinion gear that meshes with a part #41, thus transferring the horizontal twisting motion of the tiller the a vertical twisting motion.
