I recently picked up a 1957 CD-14 Johnson outboard. It starts on one to two pulls and seems to run best with the choke slightly pulled out. It won't idle long enough to shift into gear. You can shift at a higher idle but prefer not to do that. When you open her up she holds back for 30 - 40 seconds then takes off and runs great til you idle her down then she starts missing and sputtering and eventualy dies. Can you help

Most likely the carburetor is fouled. It will need to be disassembled rebuilt and cleaned. The local John/Rude dealer can still get the parts.

By the way, if it has a cork float, replace it.

My boat motor repair shop says it can't get the parts they need to tune it up. I'll have to find them on the internet and have them go to work. Do you suppose I should get points and condensers too?

You can get the whole nine yards for your motor here, but it ain't cheap....

web page

You can also get a Carb Kit here, but it does not include the float:

web page
