Finally got the ignition system completely rebuilt. I ended up setting the points then fine tuned the timing with my multimeter. First crank and she fired right up!! Let her run a good while and she ran and sounded great! Now for the new problem. When I had gone previously to change the lower unit oil, nothing came out, just a small dose of water. So I flushed the lower unit out and put in fresh oil. This is the first time I've run the engine and actually engaged forward and reverse gears. She performed as she should in gear. After shutting engine off noticed water had gotten into the lower unit when I removed the drain plug to check it. Also some of this oil/water mix was coming out of one of the water drain holes further up the engine casing. Any advice on this would be appreciated. Was wishful thinking that this wouldn't happen but I had a feeling.

Same thing happened to me, same model motor. Sounds like you get to pull the LU and replace the seals. It's not hard, but the seals can be frustrating to pull sometimes.

Great news on it firing and running. After the LU repair you'll have a brand new motor good for 20 years or more.

If you got water in the gearcase that quickly, you have a major leak. Time to tear it down for complete inspection and resealing.

But don't confuse gearcase leaks with engine oil & water mix coming out the exhaust. That's normal.

The fuel/oil mix out of the drain hole is completely normal. Its a 2 stroke right. All the fuel/oil mix doesnt get completely burned. The stuff that doesnt gets pumped out the exhaust through the lower unit assembly. There are cavities in the gearcase, with drainage holes, so that in winter the water doesnt get trapped and freeze, cracking the gearcase. That is what you saw coming out of that small hole.

Ok so the foamy tan colored liquid coming out of the casing drain holes is normal then? It looks the same when I remove the drain screw in the lower unit. That should just be plain old lower unit oil right, not the same foamy tan color? Also if I do need to replace the seals do I replace the shift shaft seal, drive shaft seal, and prop shaft seal?

Yeah as Frank stated, you must have a pretty severe leak from only running for a short time and to have that much water in there.

Get the full seal kit and be done with it.

Anyway it could be the upper to lower gear case seal? And is that something I should replace anyway just to be safe? Does anyone know of a link that shows the procedures to replacing these seals? Will check with iboats to see if they have all the parts I would need.

you should be able to get all the parts as a kit, im not sure of the part # tho. the worst part of the job is wrestling the old seals out.

There was an engineering change in 1957 involving the seals. I don't think you will find a seal KIT for the early series. The prop shaft seal on those is marked 302495. You have to order individual parts. You need your serial number and the correct parts book.

You need to take it apart and inspect for damage before ordering parts anyway. Running with water for a lubricant isn't exactly good for it.

thats very good info F_R !! just on a quick search, i found one website selling a kit for 10-15-18 hp for 1951-57 , and a different kit for 1958-67 18 hp only. so for 1957...it could be either kit , depending on date of manufacture?

The change in seal kit is determined by the serial number.

The 1957 18hp with serial numbers up to 7000 use the original kit. Serial number 7001 and up use the kit from the '58 18hps.

I have the kits if you need one.

EDIT: Just so you know the difference, the only thing that changed was the prop shaft seal to a smaller one in diameter.

hmm, does this change apply to any other 1957 models? ie 10014, 5 bolt lu sportwin? ( getting into hi jack territory!)

Sportwins dont apply here.

Just the FDs and the Fastwins.

My serial # is 03416 Chris. Figure it won't hurt to go ahead and replace all the seals. Let me know what you want for a kit and the fuel connector you sent me also.
